Starry Night ; 1889 ; Vincent van Gogh
I know this painting has become cliche due to commercialization and overuse in the media, but it still remains one of my favorite paintings. This painting lends itself to searching and wonder, and the colors contrast each other so well. I also enjoy the perspective of this painting, as if we see it through the eyes of a young lover, waiting for the lights of a parent's bedroom to dim before trekking down the hill for a secret rendezvous.
Cafe Terrace at Night; Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum ; 1888 ; Vincent van Gogh
This is my other favorite from van Gogh's starry night paintings. Once again, the contrasting bright colors emit excitement, creating a scene ripe for a late-night soiree where every possibility is present and hope fills the air.
Starry Night Over the Rhone ; 1888 ; Vincent van Gogh
This is my least favorite of his starry night paintings, but there is still a mystic quality about the power of starlight and how it reacts with the environment below. The darker colors suggest to me this painting represents a sad affair or maybe an approaching end for the aging couple.
