A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte ; 1884-1886 ; Georges Seurat
It took Seurat two years to complete this masterful painting, and who knows how much time he spent perfecting his unique technique. If you look closely at this painting, you can see how each object or person depicted is the combination of minuscule dots, some of the same color, some of other colors, blended together to create the subjects presented here. Yes! It's true! Look closely! And the original size of this painting is 7' by 10'! The technique he used, although not rather popular with other artists, is called, "pointillism." So even if you are not moved by this scene or you think the detail is too dull, at least you have to appreciate the time and effort that went into creating such a painting. Can you imagine?
