"Common sense is not so common."
~ Voltaire
I know this great thinker, writer, historian, and philosopher probably meant this quote to relate how people lacked "common sense" in general, but I choose to interpret it differently:
There is no such thing as "common sense"; what is "common" (accepted or expected ways to think or react to situations) to one culture or individual might not be so "common" to another culture or individual.
When someone employs the phrase, "That's just common sense," what they really are demonstrating is their own personal lack of knowledge or understanding of other cultures and just how differently people think and behave based on what they view as right or wrong.
