Great Performances - My Generation 12 & 13

"Otis/Lex Luthor" ; Ned Beatty & Gene Hackman ; Superman, 1978

Lex Luthor: "Costa Del Lex. Luthorville. Lexington. Marina Del Lex. Otisburg. Lex Springs... Otisburg?"

Otis: "Miss Teschmacher's got her own place."

Lex Luthor: "Otisburg?"

Otis: "It's an itty bitty town."

Lex Luthor: "OTISBURG?"

Otis: "Okay, I'll wipe it off. Just a little town, that's all."

I know both of these actors are legendary in their own rights, but something tells me if they were not paired together for these roles, something would have been lacking from either of their performances. A perfect juxtaposition--a brilliant evil genius with his clueless naive henchman, both of these characters and performances complimented each other like peanut butter and jelly, like blue cheese and hot wings, like coffee and a good book...and they have probably long been the inspiration for future comic duos in film.

No matter where you are, or who you are with, if you would hear the classic tuba composition describing Otis's journey to Lex Luthor's secret underground liar...you could not help but smile...maybe even laugh out loud, remembering.
