Basically, money itself was not considered the "root of all evil," but the "longing" for it. As this famous Bible verse has been misquoted for generations, the actual quote may be considered lost as well since The Bible has been translated and rewritten so many times; even when the quote's actual meaning is utilized, certain words of a non-consequential nature are inserted.
