Greatest Characters Ever Written 9

"Ramatoulaye" ; 1981 ; Mariama Bâ

A widowed mother of twelve children who must learn to cope with her deceased husband's choice to abandon his original family to marry a second wife four years before his death. The story is skillfully told through letters to her best friend, demonstrating Ramatoulaye's resilience, education, and ability to support her family without the aid of a spouse in modern society. One of my favorite storylines from this collection of epistles to her best friend concerns the unmarried pregnancy of one of her daughters and how beautifully Ramatoulaye manages to place the needs of her family and her daughter ahead of hew own. Simply said, Ramatoulaye is a true modern inspiration--and not only because of her resistance to remarry and brave the world as a single mother, but because she demonstrates many of the attributes of a true life guide--a true parent.
