“The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute. The man who does not ask, is a fool for life.”
~ Confucius
Whether of not the man named Confucius himself actually uttered or wrote all the aphorisms attributed to him, the words bearing his name are still very wise nonetheless. I subscribe to the main tenet of this quotation, one should ask questions when one does not know or understand something, and if one doesn't ask the questions needed answering, one may very well remain ignorant an entire lifetime; however, just because I believe in asking questions doesn't mean I believe stupid questions don't exist.
One of my favorite analogies to why or when questions should be asked comes from the Finding Forrester film (of which I do not believe is based on a novel), when Forrester becomes annoyed with Jamal asking questions and berates him on the objective of a question being to gain information of benefit to oneself, the “soup question.” If a question does not benefit you in some way, it's existence is mere folly.
